La Planete Sauvage

La Planete Sauvage (The Fantastic Planet) is an animated sc-fi French film from 1973 Directed by Rene Laloux. Apparently there is a remake planned for 2010, I really hope so. I remember seeing it on SBS a few years ago and thinking it was awesome. Here's the beginning of the movie.

I've come across it again because Planet Sauvage is the name of the new season of P.A.M. which includes some amazing jewellery.

I dont really know if the new season was influenced by the movie or not, because the name Fantastic Planet on its own without the aspects of the film is enough to describe the new season. Here is a pic of the P.A.M. "Rock Necklace" I'm quite fond of.

And on the theme of fantastic planets, I really want this digitally printed "Glory Scarf" from Trust Fun. Apparently the (I assume digitally printed) scarves' patterns are mathematically valid fractals that they have created, each one uniquely different. I love fractals. When I was younger my Dad always used to show me pictures of different ones in his New Dawn and other alternative science magazines.

Trust Fun is run/creatively saturated by Shane Sakkeus and Jonathan Zawada. They are the same peeps that did Petit Mal of which the first issue is now available to read online.

As far as I remember, my limited understanding of fractals was that it was a geometric shape that on its edges had smaller versions of itself and then those smaller shapes had even smaller versions of themselves on their edges and so on and so forth. So they appear pretty often in nature, eg snowflakes. Snowflakes have ever decreasing scales of themselves repeated throughout the form. Apparently Jackson Pollock (the artist) used fractals in his artwork. Here is a fractal.

CRASH

I recently watched a movie called "Crash" directed by David Cronenberg from 1996. (Same guy that did "Naked Lunch"). I was quite conflicted about how I felt about it in the end.

Here's a short description from IMDB; "After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife."

It's an interesting idea, definitely. The trailer is below, and the trailer makes it out to be thrilling, fast paced and deeply sensual. Now, in my opinion, the movie is none of these, but I think that is somewhat the point.

It ends up feeling cold, emotionless and empty. I didn't feel anything for any of the characters. Especially Deborah Unger, yes she's quite beautiful, but I wouldve appreciated if she didn't whisper and look off into the distance ALL THE TIME. All this said, I do recommend it, because it is really thought provoking and unsettling. It is a film you need to brood over and get slightly angry at, and then you actually realise what its about and you love it.

And I mean, seriously. SPADER.

BRICK

Brick is a great movie. Watch it if you get a chance. These pics are from my favourite scene.

BUCKAROO BANZAI

I watched Buckaroo Banzai. It was pretty weird and amusing. But most of all I LOVED this end credit song. (Video is below) And I want Perfect Tommy's white jacket. It is AWESOME. And another character called John Parker, wears these INSANE steel articulated knee protector spats kind of things. (He's the rasta guy that walks over, you can sort of see the spats). They are CRAZY. I cant find a picture anywhere though.

TOKYO GORE POLICE

 

 

These pictures are from a Japanese movie I watched the other night. It's called Tokyo Gore Police. It is hilarious. I recommend watching it, just for fun.

LIQUID SKY

This movie looks amazing. I'm gonna try and get my hands on it.
