I have always really liked this painting. There's something so eerie about it. And the fact that the way the people are positioned suggests that this is a happy moment that they are spending together, as far as the viewer knows they could be crying beneath the veils. Also, the only identification they are given is that they are lovers, two people in love, other than that they are completely anonymous. It gives the image a weirdness, to identify two people only by their feelings for each other, and nothing else.
The painting also reminds me of Maison Martin Margiela's SS09 RTW runway looks, with the covered heads.
